<strong>Admission</strong> <strong>to</strong>Hanham Woods AcademyPart of the Cabot Learning FederationPurpose of the policyThe purpose of this policy is <strong>to</strong> make theadmissions process <strong>to</strong> Hanham Woods Academyclear and open.Year 7 admissionsThe academy is supported by <strong>South</strong>Gloucestershire Council in allocating places <strong>to</strong>Hanham Woods Academy and informing families.Hanham Woods Academy has an admissionnumber of 180 places in each year group fromYear 7 <strong>to</strong> Year 11.Should Hanham Woods Academy be oversubscribed(i.e. if there are more applicationsthan places available), initial allocations will bemade according <strong>to</strong> the following criteria. Theseare listed in order of priority and will be applied <strong>to</strong>all applications received by the published closingdate for applications.1. Children in Public Care or Previously inPublic Care.2. Local siblings (those living within theacademy’s Area of Prime Responsibilityand who have named the academy as apreference).3a. Geographical considerations (thoseliving within the academy’s Area of PrimeResponsibility).3b. Geographical considerations (those livingoutside the academy’s Area of PrimeResponsibility).4. Tie breaker: Where it does not provepossible <strong>to</strong> resolve allocations <strong>to</strong> anover-subscribed <strong>school</strong>/academy by theapplication of criteria 1-3, any remainingplaces will be allocated by drawing lots.Notes:1. Children in Public Care* are those lookedafter by a local authority within the meaning ofSection 22 of the Children Act 1989. Children Previously in Public Care* are thosewho were looked after, but ceased <strong>to</strong> be sobecause they were adopted 1 (or becamesubject <strong>to</strong> a residence order 2 or specialguardianship order 3 ).* Documentation will need <strong>to</strong> be provided <strong>to</strong> <strong>South</strong>Gloucestershire Council as proof of care status.1Under the terms of the Adoption and Children Act 2002.Advice from the DfE sets out that the Adoption Act did notcome in<strong>to</strong> force until 31 December 2005 and therefore onlychildren adopted after this date qualify as Previously LookedAfter Children.2Under the terms of the Children Act 1989.3Section 14A of the Children Act 1989.2. Local siblings: children are defined aslocal siblings if:❚❚they are full or half brother or sister; orthey are adoptive brother or sister; or❚ they are children within the academy’sdefined Area of Responsibility, and they haveindicated that academy as a preference; and❚the older sibling is already in attendance atthe academy and will be in attendance inSeptember 20<strong>15</strong> (statu<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>school</strong> age only).Please note: <strong>to</strong> be defined as a ‘local sibling’ achild must live in the Area of Prime Responsibilityfor the academy.3a.
