Dos and don’ts of applying for a school placeDos and don’ts of applying for aschool placeDo✔ Complete a common application form on lineat www.southglos.gov.uk/admissions or apaper form and submit by 31 October 2014.✔ Express a preference for three schools.✔ Consider how you will get your child to school.✔ Consider naming your local school as oneof your preferences. If you do not express apreference for your local school you will not beconsidered for a place there and may receivean offer of a place some distance from yourhome address. Transport arrangements will beyour responsibility.✔ Sibling links: If you expect to have more thanone child on roll at the same school, name theyoungest sibling who is already on roll at theschool as opposed to the eldest.✔ Provide evidence if you feel there areexceptional reasons for your preference.✔ Tell us if your circumstances change.✔ Use the address where you are living as at31 October 2014 and tell us if you know youraddress is going to change before 31 October2014.✔ Check whether any school you are interestedin requires you to complete a supplementaryinformation form as well as the commonapplication form.✔ Where applicable return supplementaryinformation forms to academies andfoundation trust schools. The closing datefor supplementary information forms maydiffer from the closing date for the commonapplication form (NB everyone must completea common application form regardless ofthe school). Please check with the individualacademies and foundation trust schoolsconcerned for details.Don’t✗ Miss the deadline for submitting yourapplication form. If you miss the deadline yourpreferences will not be considered until placeshave been offered to all children for whom wereceived an application by the submission dateof 31 October 2014.✗ Assume that you do not need to apply foryour local school. You must complete anapplication form. Even if you have spoken toyour local school to inform them that you wishto be considered for a place, this does notconstitute an application and is not part of theapplication process.✗ Assume that you do not need to apply forthe school where you already have otherchildren in attendance – you must complete anapplication form.✗ Name the same school three times: this will beconsidered as one preference.✗ Assume you will be entitled to free transport.✗ Name a school if you don’t want a place there.✗ Assume that South Gloucestershire Counciloffers automatic priority to siblings.
