<strong>Admission</strong> <strong>to</strong> John Cabot Academy – Part of the Cabot Learning Federation<strong>Admission</strong> arrangements❚ We are holding one Open Evening for entryin<strong>to</strong> Year 7, on Thursday 11 September <strong>2014</strong>,3.30pm <strong>to</strong> 8.00pm (open house).❚ The local authority common application formmust be completed and returned <strong>to</strong> your homelocal authority by 31 Oc<strong>to</strong>ber <strong>2014</strong>. The localauthority will send application data <strong>to</strong> JohnCabot Academy late in November.❚ If English is not the applicants first languageit is vital that you inform the academy prior <strong>to</strong>attending the admission assessment.❚ We will send you an appointment <strong>to</strong> attendJohn Cabot Academy for an assessment. Thisacademic assessment will be a standardisednon verbal reasoning assessment specificallyconstructed by Granada Learning, anindependent provider of educationalassessments. This enables us <strong>to</strong> offer places<strong>to</strong> students of all academic abilities.❚ The assessment is scheduled for Friday 12December <strong>2014</strong>. If you have not received anappointment letter by 1 December pleasecontact the <strong>Admission</strong>s Officer at theacademy.❚ Children in Public Care are those looked afterby a local authority within the meaning ofSection 22 of the Children Act 1989. ChildrenPreviously in Public Care are those who werelooked after, and were then adopted, (orbecame subject <strong>to</strong> a residence order or specialguardianship order).❚ If you wish <strong>to</strong> be considered under thecriterion: where a child has a physical ormental impairment which has a substantialand long term adverse effect on their ability<strong>to</strong> carry out normal day <strong>to</strong> day activities,and this requires specific admission <strong>to</strong> JohnCabot Academy, i.e. no other <strong>school</strong> canaccommodate the child’s needs, we willrequire written supporting evidence from arelevant professional, e.g. Doc<strong>to</strong>r or Specialist.Supporting evidence should be sent direct <strong>to</strong>John Cabot Academy. A student will only beconsidered under this criterion if the academyreceives the supporting evidence by1 December. It is the responsibility of theparent <strong>to</strong> send the supporting evidence theywish <strong>to</strong> be considered, John Cabot Academywill not make any request for such, either froma parent or third party.No applicant is restricted <strong>to</strong> gaining a placeunder this criterion alone, a student notallocated a place at this stage is included inall other relevant criteria including the randomallocation of places within the ability bands.Examples of physical/mental impairment thatmay require entry <strong>to</strong> a specific <strong>school</strong> include:- mobility or co-ordination problems;- speech, hearing or eyesight impairment; orprogressive conditions, e.g. cancer, multiplesclerosis, muscular dystrophy; or recognisedmental illness.❚ To be classed as a sibling an applicant musthave a sibling currently attending John CabotAcademy in Years 7 <strong>to</strong> 11. In order for a Year12 age student at post 16 within the CabotLearning Federation (CLF) <strong>to</strong> be classed as asibling they must have completed KS4 at JohnCabot Academy and continue <strong>to</strong> attend theCLF on the date of admission of the applicant.Please note that twins/multiple birth applicantsare treated as individuals. As such, this mayresult in a situation where a place could beoffered <strong>to</strong> one child and not <strong>to</strong> the other/s.All assessment results and procedures for theallocation of places are open <strong>to</strong> inspectionby HMI, OfSTED and the DfE. The randomselection is witnessed by independent audi<strong>to</strong>rs.Any applicant who is absent for theassessment and who does not notify JohnCabot Academy of the circumstances ofabsence on the day of the assessmen<strong>to</strong>r within 2 working days, will be deemed<strong>to</strong> have withdrawn from the admissionsprocess.70Apply on-line at: www.southglos.gov.uk/admissions
