Admission to King’s Oak Academy – Part of the Cabot Learning FederationAdmission toKing’s Oak AcademyPart of the Cabot Learning FederationPurpose of the policyThe purpose of this policy is to make theadmissions process to King’s Oak Academy(KOA) clear and open.The Academy Council have agreed that theadmission arrangements will remain in linewith the agreed arrangements for SouthGloucestershire’s maintained non-denominationalsecondary schools.The Academy Council adheres to the statutoryrequirements and the principles expressed in theSchool Admissions Code.Year 7 admissions: The Academy Council aresupported by South Gloucestershire Council inallocating places to the academy and informingfamilies.Admission number – year 7KOA has a published admission number of 150places, leading to a total number of 750 placesacross Years 7 to 11.In September 2022 the number of placesavailable for external allocation in Year 7 at KOAwill drop to 90 [with the proviso that the AcademyCouncil reserves the right to increase this numberif there are fewer than 60 students moving up fromYear 6 to Year 7, or to reduce the number if thereare more than 60 students moving up from Year6 to Year 7 in any year, so that the total number ofstudents starting in Year 7 each year is 150].The Academy Council commissions the localauthority’s independent appeal panel which hearsappeals from unsuccessful applicants for a placein any year group.The Admission Criteria andArrangementsProcess of applicationArrangements for applications for places atthe academy will be made in accordance withSouth Gloucestershire Council’s co-ordinatedadmission arrangements and will be submittedon the common application form provided by theapplicant’s home authority and administered bySouth Gloucestershire Council.Consideration of applicationsThe Academy Council will consider allapplications for places at KOA. Where fewerapplications for places are received than thepublished admission number, the AcademyCouncil will offer places to all those who haveapplied.Procedure where the academy is oversubscribedWhere the number of applications foradmission into Year 7 is greater than thepublished admission number, applicationswill be considered against the criteria set outbelow. These are listed in priority order and willbe applied to all applications received by thepublished closing date.1. Children in Public Care and Previously inPublic Care.2. Local siblings (those living within theacademy’s Area of Prime Responsibilityand who have named the academy as apreference).3a. Geographical considerations [thoseliving within the academy’s Area of PrimeResponsibility].72Apply on-line at: www.southglos.gov.uk/admissions

Tie breaker: Where it does not provepossible to resolve allocations to anover-subscribed school/academy by theapplication of criteria 1-3, any remainingplaces will be allocated by drawing lots.Notes to the over-subscription criteria are setout below:1. Children in Public Care* are those lookedafter by a local authority within the meaning ofSection 22 of the Children Act 1989. ChildrenPreviously in Public Care* are those who werelooked after but ceased to be so becausethey were adopted 1 (or became subject toa residence order 2 or special guardianshiporder 3 ).* Documentation will need to be provided to SouthGloucestershire Council as proof of care status.1Under the terms of the Adoption and Children Act 2002.Advice from the DfE sets out that the Adoption Act did notcome into force until 31 December 2005 and therefore onlychildren adopted after this date qualify as Previously LookedAfter Children.2Under the terms of the Children Act 1989.3Section 14A of the Children Act 1989.2. Local siblings: children are defined as localsiblings if:❚❚they are full or half brother or sister; orthey are adoptive brother or sister; or❚ they are children of the same household; and❚❚❚they live within the academy’s defined Area ofResponsibility; andthey have indicated the academy as apreference; andthe older sibling is already in attendance atthe academy and will be in attendance inSeptember 2015 (statutory school/academyage only).Please note: to be defined as a ‘local sibling’ achild must live in the Area of Prime Responsibilityfor the academy.3a. Geographical considerations (for thoseliving within the academy’s Area of PrimeResponsibility): Priority will be given to thosechildren who live within the Area of PrimeResponsibility for the academy.If in any year there are more children livingwithin the Area of Prime Responsibilitythan the number of places available at theacademy, priority will be given to thosechildren who live closest to the academy.Distances from home to the academy aremeasured in a straight line between theaddress point of the child’s home and acentral point within the main academybuilding using South GloucestershireCouncil’s computerised mapping system. Allapplications will be considered at the sametime and the published over-subscriptioncriteria applied.3b. Geographical considerations (for thoseliving outside the academy’s Area ofPrime Responsibility): After places havebeen allocated from within the Area of PrimeResponsibility, any remaining places will beallocated to those children who live closestto the academy. Distances from home tothe academy are measured in a straight linebetween the address point of the child’s homeand a central point within the main academybuilding using South GloucestershireCouncil’s computerised mapping system. Allapplications will be considered at the sametime and the published over-subscriptioncriteria applied.4.
