GV90+ gas-fired water boiler — Boiler ManualAnnual start-up (continued)Inspect boiler relief valveFigure 80 Relief valve1. Inspect the relief valve (Figure 80) and lift the lever to verifyflow as in the following warnings, excerpted from a relief valvemanufacturer’s warning label. Before operating any relief valve, ensure that it is piped with its discharge in a safe area to avoidsevere scald potential. Read page 12 before proceeding further.Safety relief valves should be reinspected AT LEASTONCE EVERY THREE YEARS, by a licensed plumbingcontractor or authorized inspection agency, toensure that the product has not been affected by corrosivewater conditions and to ensure that the valveand discharge line have not been altered or tamperedwith illegally. Certain naturally occurring conditionsmay corrode the valve or its components over time, rendering the valve inoperative. Such conditions arenot detectable unless the valve and its componentsare physically removed and inspected. This inspectionmust only be conducted by a plumbing contractoror authorized inspection agency — not bythe owner. Failure to reinspect the boiler relief valveas directed could result in unsafe pressure buildup, which can result in severe personal injury, death orsubstantial property damage.Following installation, the valve lever must beoperated AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR to ensure thatwaterways are clear. Certain naturally occurringmineral deposits may adhere to the valve, renderingit inoperative. When manually operating the lever, water will discharge and precautions must be takento avoid contact with hot water and to avoid waterdamage. Before operating lever, check to see that adischarge line is connected to this valve directingthe flow of hot water from the valve to a properplace of disposal. Otherwise severe personal injurymay result. If no water flows, valve is inoperative.Shut down boiler until a new relief valve has beeninstalled.2. After following the above warning directions, if the reliefvalve weeps or will not seat properly, replace the relief valve.Ensure that the reason for relief valve weeping is the valve andnot over-pressurization of the system due to expansion tankwaterlogging or under-sizing.To complete Annual Start-up,perform startup and checks:1. COMPLETE the annual start-up proceduresbeginning on page 68.2. Start boiler and perform checks and tests specifiedin this manual.3. Verify cold fill pressure is correct and that operatingpressure does not go too high.4. Complete the check-out procedure on page 64.Review with owner1. Review the User’s Information Manual with theowner.2. Emphasize the need to perform the maintenanceschedule specified in the User’s InformationManual (and in this manual as well).3. Remind the owner of the need to call a licensedcontractor should the boiler or system exhibitany unusual behavior.4. Remind the owner to follow the proper shutdownprocedure and to schedule an annual startup atthe beginning of the next heating season.Part number 550-142-054/1211 71
