appendixb-sourcesUnlike <strong>Burnley</strong> and many of the other towns in Lancashire there has never been a detailedgeneral history written of <strong>Padiham</strong>. As a result the <strong>Padiham</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> <strong>Appraisal</strong> has had to usea variety of different source materials including various published works, newspaper articles,the census, ordnance survey maps, building control records and old photographs in orderto gain an insight and understanding into the development of the town. <strong>The</strong>se sources arereferenced throughout the appraisal and listed in Appendix C.Published Works104 heritage appraisal<strong>The</strong> lack of a comprehensive history has meant that the <strong>Padiham</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> <strong>Appraisal</strong> has hadto rely heavily on a small number of published works. <strong>The</strong>se publications have been usedto lay the foundations for the information given on the historic development of the town andto assess the historic and architectural significance of a number of buildings and features.For example the trade directories of the 19th and early 20th centuries have provided vitalinformation on the local economy and on the trades and professions of those living in <strong>Padiham</strong>.Bennett’s four volume series entitled a ‘History of <strong>Burnley</strong>’ published between 1946 and 1951was until recently the most modern published historical account of <strong>Padiham</strong>. Although the mainfocus is on <strong>Burnley</strong>, Bennett does give a brief account of <strong>Padiham</strong> during the Middle Agesthrough into the 19th century.In the late 20th century a small number of other local historians also had work published on<strong>Padiham</strong>’s history. <strong>The</strong>se include Armstrong, Glenn and Haines and Jones. Armstrong’s 1985‘Owd <strong>Padiham</strong>’ contains a pictorial history of the town during the late 19th and early 20thcenturies. Armstrong also gives some interesting facts and information about the buildings,places, features and people illustrated in the photographs.Between 1989 and 1990 Glenn wrote a series of articles published in the Red Rose Magazine,which give a detailed history of <strong>Padiham</strong>. Glenn also worked with members of the WorkersEducational Association (WEA) Local History Class at <strong>Padiham</strong> Adult Education Centre toproduce ‘St. Giles St: <strong>The</strong> History of a Working Class Street’ in 1986. <strong>The</strong> information givenprovides not only an insight into the work, lives and living conditions of those living in St. GilesStreet but also those living and working in <strong>Padiham</strong> during the 19th century.Haines and Jones produced ‘<strong>Padiham</strong> Urban District <strong>Council</strong> 1894-1974: Eighty Years of LocalGovernment’ in 1994. This publication has been used to understand the administration of localgovernment during the town’s industrial and development boom.More recently Lancashire County <strong>Council</strong> and Egerton Lea Consultancy have produced aseries of Historic Town Assessment Reports. <strong>The</strong> draft ‘<strong>Padiham</strong> Historic Town AssessmentReport’ published in 2004 provides a useful overview of the development of the town frommedieval settlements through to modern day developments. This draft report has alsoevaluated, assessed and characterised buildings, streets and neighbourhoods in the town.In addition Rothwell’s ‘Industrial <strong>Heritage</strong>: A Guide to the Industrial Archaeology of <strong>Padiham</strong>and District’, 2005 has provided the core information on <strong>Padiham</strong>’s industrial buildings used inthe <strong>Appraisal</strong>.List of Published ReferencesArmstrong D 1985.
