6.5. Churches and schools6.5.1 By the mid 1890s there were three churches within thecharacter area. The most impressive of these architecturally,Cross Bank Wesleyan Chapel, designed by local architectsWilliam Waddington and Sons, had opened in 1892 next door tothe Wesleyan Day School which was founded some twenty yearsearlier. The chapel and school building were demolished in 1991and part of the site was used for a small development of newhouses (Cross Bank).6.5.2 The Mount Zion Chapel, Pendle Street is a locally listedbuilding (Plan A). It has a datestone of 1876. An 1892 plan ofPadiham Town Centre describes the chapel as ‘Particular Baptist’with seats for 400 following its extension in the same year. TheParticular Baptists had seceded from the main Baptists on BurnleyRoad in 1866. After 1900 many churches suffered a decline and in1948 the chapel closed and the Co-op took over the building. In1970, however, the building was restored to its original use by theBurnley Baptists.6.5.3 The nearby Horeb Union Chapel/Sunday School onVictoria Road, now used as a nursery, was opened in 1896 at acost of £2,000 by a separate group of Baptists who had split fromBurnley Road Baptists. Land for the chapel was bought from theGawthorpe estate and the foundation stones laid in 1895. Thechapel which was capable of seating 900, was known as the HorebUnion Free Congregational chapel, the Congregationalists beinga minor sect in Padiham with only one small chapel (adjacent toVictoria Mill) in 1882. Having closed sometime between the wars,the chapel subsequently became the town’s Labour Exchange, aDriving Test Centre and Padiham Job Centre. The building is notlocally listed but is considered to have local heritage value (Plan F).6.5.4 Padiham UDC opened the County Primary School in1910 following the closure of Cross Bank Methodist Day School.The Council school provided much improved accommodationfor elementary pupils in that part of Padiham (Haines and Jones1994).
