The structural layout provides workers withopportunities to create their own places and feel at home. Within a regularstructural grid, spaces or cells 9 m by 9 m in plan, connect via shortcorridors or bridges and are flanked by voids. The layout offers a wealthof three-dimensional spatial variation and experience. Cells merge andinterweave together. Column-pairs articulate thresholds between cellsand circulation between them. Each cell, square in plan, is supported bytwo columns at the third-points along each side with the clear spanbetween them little more than 2 m. It is the combination of closespacing between columns and their reasonably large dimensions enablingthem to act as screens that introduces a domestic and relatively intimatefeel to the spaces. The structure also enhances privacy and the ability forindividuality to be expressed and respected. Building users gain a strongimpression of inhabiting the structure and of engaging with it regularly incontrast to the occasional structural encounter experienced in typicalopen-plan office accommodation.
