A glazed box with an entry canopy.▲ 3.27Interior timber structure.A glazed box encloses the Mont-Cenis Academy complex, a governmenttraining centre at Herne. An extended roof plane forms an entrycanopy (Fig. 3.26). The self-contained campus includes three-storeyaccommodation blocks, library, administration, teaching spaces, diningrooms and spacious ‘outdoor’ areas. Responding to the site’s coal mininghistory, a particularly environmentally friendly design approach isevidenced by the timber structure and the ‘clouds’ of photovoltaic cellsthat cover 50 per cent of the roof surface. A forest of poles supportscontinuous transverse timber trusses that in turn support compositetimber and steel purlins. The vertical timber trusses that support thewall glazing provide face-load support for the walls, which exceed fourstoreys. Steel tension-only bracing in several bays within the perimeterwalls and the roof plane ensures overall stability and wind resistance.The visually dominant timber post-and-beam system with its regulargrid layout, relates better to the architectural form than do the structuraldetails. The roundness of the natural poles and the presence ofthe diagonal members in the roof and the wall-mullion trusses introducenon-orthogonal elements into an otherwise entirely rectilinearenclosure (Fig. 3.27). The diagonal steel rod cross-bracing in the roofplane and on the wall elevations also is at odds with the stark architecturalform, but its fineness renders it barely discernible against the densityof considerably larger timber members. An intriguing aspect aboutthis project is the disparity of construction materials. Round timberpoles, with little finishing other than bark removal, contrast stronglywith the sleek glazed skin to highlight the differences between naturaland artificial environments which lie at the heart of this project.From the perspective of its architectural form, the European Institute ofHealth and Medical Sciences building, Guildford, represents a higherlevel of complexity.
