Drawing upon nautical imagery, ribbedtimber construction defines the curved surfaces at the EuropeanInstitute of Health and Medical Sciences, Guilford (see Fig. 3.28), andunder the Némausus Apartments, Nîmes, uniformly-distributed slendercolumns create the impression of the building floating. Shear wallsthat read as rudders, given their location at the rear of the ‘ship’ andtheir rudder-like elevational profile, provide longitudinal stability for theground floor (see Fig. 5.13).▲ 9.14 The main columns align with thekeel and are flanked by stabilizing posts.The nautical theme surfaces again at the Armenian School Library, LosAngeles, a new addition to an already cramped site. Raised one storeyabove the ground, four large red elliptically clad columns and some slendersteel tubes are the library’s only footprint (Figs 9.13 and 9.14).
