Windows and skylightsare normally positioned between structural members. The BurrellGallery restaurant, Glasgow – a timber and glass ‘lean-to’ that wrapsaround the south-east corner of the gallery – provides a simple yetattractive example (Fig. 8.7). Natural light entering the fully glazedenclosure passes between closely spaced 330 mm by 100 mm gluelaminatedtimber posts and rafters. While a strong yet simple rhythm ofstructure and light characterizes the space, structure not only limits thedaylight, but to some extent modifies it. Given that the posts and raftersare spaced at little more than twice their depths, the members createshade and also reflect light off their vertical surfaces.Light passes between the structural members of the reinforced concretecatenary of the Portuguese Pavilion, Lisbon, far more dramatically(see Fig. 3.9). An unprecedented design decision led to the removal ofa narrow strip of concrete at the northern end of the catenary thatwould normally cover the tension rods. Above the podium where visitingdignitaries to Expo ’98 were publicly welcomed, sunlight filtersthrough exposed stainless-steel rods. Striated shadows pattern the buttresswalls that withstand the catenary tensions (Fig. 8.8). The projectstructural engineer, Cecil Balmond, describes the effect poetically:Made out of concrete, the curve flies seventy metres without apparenteffort – from afar it looks as if it is made of paper. And at the last momentof span, just before the safety of the vertical anchors, the form is cut. Linesof cables cross the void instead, pinning themselves to strong abutments.
