Mingala MarketMARKET(Map p 178 ; Yone Gyi Rd) The busy zei (market)at the entrance to town is flooded with localsevery morning, when traders from thelake bring in fresh fish and produce fromthe floating gardens. A few stalls sell localhandicrafts but the focus is on day-to-dayobjects used by local people – food, beggingbowls, machetes, fishing spears, you nameit. The market doubles in size when it hoststhe five-day rotating market (see boxed text,p 183 ).Other Religious MonumentsThere are stupas and monasteries all overNyaungshwe. Most of the monasteries areclustered around the Mong Li Canal, southeastof the market.Hlaing Gu Kyaung (Map p 178 ; off Yone GyiRd) has around 100 resident monks and aninteresting collection of antique Buddha images.Nearby, Shwe Gu Kyaung (Map p 178 ;Myawady Rd) has 130 novice monks and ahuge central hall that echoes with the soundof synchronised chanting. A block furthersouth, Kan Gyi Kyaung (Map p 178 ; MyawadyRd) is the largest monastery in Nyaungshwe;listening to 250 monks of all ages recitingthe scriptures is quite an experience.About a mile and a half north of town onthe road to Shwenyaung, Shwe YaunghweKyaung (off Map p 178 ; Shwe Yan Pyay) is probablythe most photographed monastery in Nyaungshwe;the unique oval windows in theancient teak thein (ordination hall) create aperfect frame for portraits of the novices.South of Nyaungshwe in the village ofNanthe, Yan Aung Nan Aung Hsu Taung PyiPagoda (Map p 185 ) features a 26ft-high sittingbuddha, surrounded by stucco deva (celestialbeings) and chinthe (half-lion, half-dragonguardians). Although heavily restored, thestatue is said to be more than 700 years old.Boat TripsEvery hotel in town can arrange boat tripsaround the lake, and freelance boat driverswill approach you in the street.
