The cheapestbasement dives are, in contrast, musty withsaggy beds, sorry little squat-toilet cubiclesand headless showers.Royal Ground HOTEL $(%25516; Theinni Rd; r with shower/bath $17/19;a) Clean, all-air-con motel-like place with35 rooms on two floors that extend wellback from the busy road. Showers in someare a little rusty and little English is spokenbut it’s next door to the town’s most centralinternet cafe.Ya Htaik HOTEL $(%22655; Bogyoke Rd; fan/air-con r $15/18, ste$25; a) Fair-sized rooms are perfectly bearableand beds are comfy but the puke greenwalls are off-putting and several fittings arein need of a little freshening up. Suites arebigger but not better, apart from a balconyin some. The lift shaft still has no lift.5EatingThere are a selection of food stalls aroundthe junction of Theinni Rd and Bogyoke St,and many many more appear after 5pm aspart of the bustling night market (h5pm-9pm). Shan specialities here include pig-organhotpots, Shan noodle soup and savourycakes made from steamed purple sticky riceand sesame seeds.Sun Moon Café CHINESE, THAI $(Bogyoke Rd; meals K1500; h9am-9pm) Abovean over-lit bakery, this is about the brightest,cleanest and most Western-friendly eateryin central Lashio albeit without any realhint of style. The picture menu helps youguess what you’re ordering.Royal Restaurant CHINESE $(Samkaung St; barbecue items per stick from K100,meals K1000-8000; h11am-10pm) Every bit asgrubby and uninviting as most of the downmarketcentral eateries, but the barbecuefood’s fine and you can wash it down withdraught Myanmar Beer (K650).
