Over time there have been many developments in relation with buildingdocumentation. Nowadays, modern (new active photogrammetric sensors such as 3DTerrestrial Laser Scanners) have become much better than conventional methods (analogueand digital passive sensors) for purposes such as measure of the deformations, pathologiesand representation of the current state. This technology is easier, precise and time-saving incomparison with the traditional methods. This article presents a comparison between traditional and newer active methods in order toestablish the efficiency of the data and establish which is the most appropriate technology forthe purpose we have.Furthermore this article presents a complete review of possibilities of building documentation, from 2D until 4D will be shown, and give some indications of how to manage them as awhole in order to exploit all the potential of information and support decision making onbuildings.37º <strong>IAHS</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> On Housing Science 342
