VANSTONE: TIKCHIK VILLAGE 243selves.The most distinctive feature of house 4 was the cribbing ofshort, horizontal logs which was found in three corners of the residentialarea. Wood preservation was fair and the remains of horizontallogs were found along three walls. These wall logs extendedjust to the cribbing, suggesting that this type of corner constructionwas used because it enabled the builder to utilize shorter logs for thewalls. The cribbing appears to have been supported by two verticalposts placed at either end in such a way that they also served as supportsfor the wall timbers. Although four-post-center constructionis indicated for this dwelling, the arrangement of the posts was ratherhaphazard and the whole interior appeared oriented in the directionof the slanted tunnel. The benches were also unusual in that theywere raised much higher above the center floor than in any of theFig. 9. House 5.
