By reciting oµ å© h¥µ he binds protection to himself.He should then engage in such things as [reciting verses <strong>of</strong>] praise,recitation <strong>of</strong> mantra-s, meditation, and study. He should also recitethe Nåmasaçg∆ti three times a day.[18.3] After this, he quietly intones oµ jambhalajalendråya svåhåand must then <strong>of</strong>fer to Jambhala 54 one hundred and eight handfuls<strong>of</strong> water. <strong>The</strong>n, he recites this mantra seven times: “Beholding allthe tathågatas, homage to all buddhas. Oµ sambhara sambharah¥µ pha† pha† svåhå.” With drops <strong>of</strong> ghee dripping <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> the fivefingers <strong>of</strong> his stretched out right hand, he should see that strings <strong>of</strong>food and water <strong>of</strong>ferings, purified and filled with a dro√a <strong>of</strong> anise,are placed at the bottom <strong>of</strong> the door. Leaving a triple portion in thevestibule for preta-s and piΩcåca-s, he makes a food <strong>of</strong>fering to thebodhisattvas.[18.13] Now, he is to clearly realize [the following]: lovingkindness toward all people, the kind <strong>of</strong> love that one feelstoward an only son; compassion that has the nature <strong>of</strong> a longingto remove [all people] from the ocean <strong>of</strong> saµsåra, caused byboth what is unpleasant and what is not unpleasant; joy, whichis the majesty <strong>of</strong> the mind bursting forth from going to refuge inthe triple jewel; and equanimity, which is the quality <strong>of</strong> beingcompletely unattached.[Imaginative Creation (Bhåvana) <strong>of</strong> the Ma√∂ala][18.16] On a section <strong>of</strong> the ground where a circle has been consecratedwith pure cow dung, clean water, [and by reciting themantra] oµ å© vajrarekhe h¥µ, he whose mind is employed inzealous engagement on behalf <strong>of</strong> all beings makes a ma√∂ala <strong>of</strong>four sides, a square, or however desired. He then imagines [thefollowing]. In the middle <strong>of</strong> the ma√∂ala, which has a border <strong>of</strong>eight lotus petals <strong>of</strong> several different colors, on a sun disk, arisingcompletely out <strong>of</strong> the form <strong>of</strong> a blue h¥µ, is Ak≈obhya. He is blackin color and forms the “touching the earth” gesture. <strong>The</strong>n, on theeastern side, arising out <strong>of</strong> the form <strong>of</strong> a white oµ, white in color,forming the “requisite <strong>of</strong> awakening” gesture, is Vairocana, [20.2]<strong>The</strong>n, on the southern side, generated from the form <strong>of</strong> a yellowtråµ, yellow in color, forming the “generosity” gesture, isRatnasaµbhava. <strong>The</strong>n, on the western side, generated from theform <strong>of</strong> a red hr∆©, red in color, forming the “contemplation”gesture, is Amitåbha. <strong>The</strong>n, on the northern side, generated from
