Glossary<br />

Add-on. An independent program that performs additional services<br />

for a certain piece of software. � Plugin.<br />

Administrator (Admin). Software user with special rights. Has <strong>the</strong><br />

task of installing, maintaining and updating <strong>the</strong> software and of establishing<br />

<strong>the</strong> conditions that normal users need to perform <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

daily business with <strong>the</strong> software.<br />

ASCII. Refers to a standard of code for characters on a computer.<br />

ASCII text often stands for simple, non-formatted text. ASCII art is<br />

<strong>the</strong> depiction of drawings using simple text. Requires that <strong>the</strong> text be<br />

rendered in a non-proportional font.<br />

Authoring tool. An application with which various data, such as<br />

text, graphics, sound or animation, can be assembled to create multimedia<br />

content.<br />

Back end. Refers to that portion of a software application that runs<br />

on <strong>the</strong> server and administers <strong>the</strong> data. In comparison, <strong>the</strong> program<br />

that displays <strong>the</strong> data to <strong>the</strong> client is known as <strong>the</strong> front end. The<br />

back end area is only accessible to administrators.<br />

Backlink. A link on ano<strong>the</strong>r page that leads to <strong>the</strong> current page.<br />

Blog. (“Weblog”). A type of web-based diary in which <strong>the</strong> blogger<br />

can quickly publish articles. These entries are displayed in a list, beginning<br />

with <strong>the</strong> newest entry. O<strong>the</strong>r users can usually comment on<br />

but not alter entries.<br />

CamelCase. Special practice of writing words toge<strong>the</strong>r to form a<br />

link in wikis. A word begins with a capital letter and has at least one<br />
