370 V DISCOURSES OF RUMIbring life into a state of death through abandonmentof God, corruption and disobedience, thenout of this setting sun manifest the illuminationthat only rises out of obedience.”But that is not the job of the servant, and theservant will never be able to do it. That is God’sjob; for if He wishes He causes the sun to risefrom the west, and if He wishes from the east. The unbeliever and the believer both expressthe praises of God. For God has promised thatanyone who chooses the right road and practicesright action, following the sacred law and the wayof the prophets and saints, shall be granted happiness, illumination and life. If they do thereverse, they will be granted darkness and fear, pits and suffering. Since both believer and unbelieverchoose as they do, and what God haspromised comes to pass precisely, neither morenor less, then both are proclaiming the praises ofGod—the believer with one tongue, and the unbelieverwith another. How great that difference isbetween the praises of one, and the praises of theother!
