FIHI MA FIHI V 67moth is this way by nature. No matter how muchthat consuming flame and agony may hurt, themoth cannot fly from the candle. If there wereanother creature like the moth that could not flyaway from the light of the candle, and dasheditself against that light, that would not be a merecomparison, that would be a moth itself. But ifthe moth dashed itself against the light of the candleand the moth were not consumed, that indeedcould not be a candle.Therefore, the human being who can do withoutGod, lacking even the desire, that is nohuman being at all. But if they are able to comprehendGod, that indeed could not be God. So,the true lover is never free from striving, theyrevolve restlessly and ceaselessly around the lightof God. And God consumes them, making themnothing, destroying the veil of their reason.
