4. R&D and Innovation Labs: TCS establishedthe first software R&D centre in Pune, India in1981 called the Tata Research Design andDevelopment Centre, mindful of theimportance of research to ensure sustainedmarket leadership. Over the last two and a halfdecades, R&D has evolved in TCS in line withthe environment and market conditions withrenewed customer focus. As on March 31, 2009,TCS had established 20 R&D Innovation Labswith specific focus on technologies and verticals.The Company has also established 46 Centersof Excellence (CoEs) in all areas of informationtechnology and business services as well as onpartner products. This ensures all our offeringsincorporate the latest products and servicescapabilities from the Company and its alliancepartners and allows us to build new skill setsamong the employee base.The network of TCS Innovation Labs work onresearch themes ranging from OperationalEfficiency, Business Agility and Simplification,to Customer Experience, Ubiquity andEnterprise Security. They also explore new areaslike Green IT and emerging technologies likeCloud Computing and the evolution of theinternet beyond Web 2.0. The Innovation labswork closely with the TCS business units andcustomers across a well-defined set ofinnovation horizons.4.1 Tools and Frameworks: The Companycontinues to invest in technology products,frameworks and tools to assist customers toachieve significantly higher operationalefficiency and realize time, cost and energybenefits at maximum Return on Investment(RoI). These are based on leading edgetechnologies and address both IT and businessrequirements of customers. Company hasinvented and developed a number of products,frameworks and productivity tools in thefollowing areas: Software Engineering tools fordevelopment, testing, migration, reengineering,and performancemanagement Infrastructure Management tools forrelating systems information to businessevents, simplification of server, networkand storage, measurement andoptimization of ‘Data Center’ power, andhigh-performance computing applications Domain-specific frameworks andcomponents for customer analytics,authentication and security, marketunderstanding, risk and compliance,optimization, visualization and modeling,‘Business Process’, management tools fortask automation, workflow, applicationsintegration and knowledge capture Knowledge management tools usingsocial networking techniques,information extraction & text mining andWeb 2.0.These tools and frameworks are built andsupported by TCS Innovation labs workingclosely with the technology excellence groupand the domain teams from different businessunits4.2 Intellectual Property (IP) and Patents: Wehave defined an IP strategy with a view tobuilding an effective portfolio for futuremonetization, collaboration and risk mitigation.The total number of granted patents is 42. Inaddition, TCS has over 150 patents pending inmultiple jurisdictions, including 58 filed in 2008-09.Chart 18: TCS Intellectual Property Strategy- Patents filed and granted4.3 R&D talent pool: Our R&D organization hasgrown to over 500 people. We have more thandoubled the number of PhDs in TCS R&D to over50 and have attracted top talent from notableuniversities across the world. A large numberof lateral hires from Indian and overseasinstitutions were inducted into the R&D groupsin FY09 and 17 global university academicalliances were put in place.5. Human Resources: The Company continuedto invest in human resources development. Thetotal number of employees includingsubsidiaries as at March 31, 2009 was 143,761(111,407 as at March 31, 2008).Of these 143,761 employees at the end of fiscal2009, 17,611 were the employees of theCompany’s Subsidiaries like CMC, WTI, TCS e-Serve Limited, Diligenta and others.
