8.3 Impact assessment8.3.1 Potential for direct impacts on listed itemsThe proposal has the potential to physically impact the items located within the proposal site,listed in Table 8.2. The potential impacts on these items are considered below.Pyrmont BridgeRemoving the <strong>Monorail</strong> from the bridge would result in an alteration to the structure <strong>of</strong> thebridge. As a result, the removal works undertaken at the bridge as part <strong>of</strong> work component 5would require approval under section 60 <strong>of</strong> the Heritage Act 1977.The methodology for this work component has been prepared in consultation with SHFA andthe Heritage Office. Completion <strong>of</strong> the works in accordance with this methodology, the mitigationmeasures listed in section 8.4, and any conditions <strong>of</strong> approval under the Heritage Act, wouldensure that the proposal is undertaken in a manner that is sympathetic to the heritagesignificance <strong>of</strong> the bridge.The Pyrmont Bridge Conservation Management Plan (SHFA 2006) notes that the <strong>Monorail</strong> is anintrusive element on the bridge, and recommends that it be removed or modified in the longterm to reduce the adverse impact. It is considered that the proposal would result in a positiveheritage outcome for the bridge as it would:• remove intrusive additions• enhance the setting and views• allow for water penetration issues associated with the installation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Monorail</strong> to berectified• allow for the return <strong>of</strong> the bridge control cabin to its original condition, and the manualbrake system to be reinstated.Former School <strong>of</strong> ArtsThe Former School <strong>of</strong> Arts building is located on the same land parcel as the Galeries VictoriaStation, which would be removed as part <strong>of</strong> the proposal. Although no physical works areproposed for the Former School <strong>of</strong> Arts building itself, the building immediately adjacent to itwould be impacted by the proposal. As a result, the potential impacts on this item are alsoconsidered.Removing the Galeries Victoria Station would result in an alteration to the building adjoining andon the same land parcel as the Former School <strong>of</strong> Arts. As a result, the removal worksundertaken as part <strong>of</strong> work component 4 would also require approval under section 60 <strong>of</strong> theHeritage Act.The methodology for this work component has been prepared in consultation with the HeritageOffice. Completion <strong>of</strong> the works in accordance with this methodology, the mitigation measureslisted in section 8.4, and any conditions <strong>of</strong> approval under the Heritage Act, would ensure thatthe proposal is undertaken in a manner that is sympathetic to the heritage significance <strong>of</strong> thisitem.It is considered that the proposal would result in a positive heritage outcome for this item as itwould its setting and views.Special Area 2, York StreetIn York Street, the proposal would involve works undertaken as part <strong>of</strong> work component 2.
