5.3.1 Phase 1 – removal of structural steel itemsPhase 1 would involve the works and traffic management process required to remove thefollowing infrastructure:• services cables• busbars (the power distribution source)• signage (where affected by rail beam/column removal)• rail beams• rail beam components, e.g. access hole latches, brackets.• steel columns• rail bearings.A number of cables run through the centre of the beam. As cutting the cabling in situ wouldpose a risk in terms of fire and generation of potentially toxic smoke, it would need to becompletely removed prior to removal of the beams.The concept for the beam and column removal is shown in Figure 5.2. The concept for removalof the steel beam and column structures involves making cuts at predetermined locations(typically 1500 mm from the centreline of columns), to divide the steel components intoremovable portions. This method is intended to minimise the quantity of cuts required to bemade whilst the rail is elevated, and optimise the number of crane lifts necessary.The cutting process would leave the rail in a series of beam segments and ‘T’ units (partialbeam and column units). Prior to cutting, temporary beam supports would be installed to securethe beams for cutting and lifting. At the location of the beam cut, holes would be drilled in thetop flange of the beam section to enable fixing the temporary supports. The temporary supportswould transfer the load of the disconnected beam segment to the adjacent Monorail beam. Thiswould enable the beam segment to be temporarily supported during crane setup and liftpreparation.Following the completion of cutting, the beam segments and T-units would be removed usingmobile cranes.Resource requirementsTable 5.1 describes the key tasks that would comprise phase 1, together with an indication ofthe equipment and labour requirements. All resources are exclusive of establishment andmaintenance of the traffic management that would be required. The table describes theresources envisaged for a single work face.
