Two places named “Fort Deposit” were created as supply depots to supportAmerican army campaigns during the Creek War, one in the far north by General Andrew Jackson andone in the south by General Ferdinand Claiborne. Lowndes County’s Fort Deposit originated withGeneral Claiborne’s march against the Redstick Creek stronghold of Holy Ground. Claiborne’s army,consisting of troops from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, Mississippi Territorial Volunteers, Americanmilitia, and Choctaw warriors, totaling 1,000 men advanced north from Fort Claiborne up the FederalRoad on December 13, 1813, guided by Samuel Moniac. According to G. W. Creagh, who served as alieutenant in Captain Sam Dale’s militia company,“The command moved on until we reached the neighborhood South of Double swampthere we located & built Fort Deposit leaving there the wagons cannon & all the baggagethe sick and one hundred men to guard the fort. We then drew three days portion of flourthe pork having failed, and commenced the march to the Holy Ground…. [After thebattle, which occurred on December 23] Christmas morning found many of us parchingcorn for breakfast, without any thing to let us know that Christmas had come. We fired a164
