Fletcher Hale’s interpretation of the Old Federal Road, based on 1930s aerial photographs, placesthe road approximately 2 miles north of Luckett’s route through much of northern Baldwin andnorthwestern Escambia counties (Figures 4-6 and 4-7). Hale’s road meets and then coincides with othersource routes just north of Jack Springs. His road runs south of Montpelier, a cantonment erected soonafter the War of 1812. This road may be a branch of the Old Federal Road. Hale’s maps were also usefulin identifying the branch from Fort Mims to Blakely, which was part of a longer ancillary mail route fromFort Claiborne to Blakely.Figure 4-6.
