This map does not show the original FederalRoad through this section at all. William Darby’s 1828 Map of Alabama and Georgia also shows only thebranch to Montgomery and not the original Federal Road (Figure 8-9). Together they suggest completeabandonment of the original route by the mid-1820s. On the other hand, John LaTourette’s 1838 Map ofAlabama depicts both the later branch to Montgomery and the original Federal Road (Figure 8-10).However, since LaTourette’s map was compiled from General Land Office surveys, the Federal Roadroute could have been copied from surveys dating as early as 1817. The original Federal Road in this areadoes not appear on maps post-dating 1838.Figure 8-8.
