FM 3-22.1Figure 6-35. Point target technique.6-23. COAX AREA TARGETSFor personnel dispersed over a large area (over 10 meters), the gunner uses the areatarget-engagement technique (Figure 6-36). He can engage area targets while the BFV ismoving or stationary.a. Example Area Target in Depth. To engage an area target, the gunner lays thereticle on center mass of the target area and fires an initial burst. Each burst consists of 10to 15 rounds. Once he has confirmed the range to the target, he fires a second bursthorizontally across the front of the target area. He fires the third burst diagonally acrossthe target area. He fires the fourth burst horizontally across the rear of the target area. After the gunner successfully suppresses the target, the BC commands CEASE FIRE.b. Example Frontal Area Target. When a target presents a frontal area, themovement of the BFV's turret and of the vehicle itself carries the burst on through thetarget (Figure 6-37, page 6-38). Round dispersion also helps cover the width of the target.Figure 6-36. Example technique for area target in depth.6-37
