SAI-CARE An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building E. 1. Introduction We cannot completely reverse the effects of deforestation and global warming, but we can discover how planting trees can help to combat climate change and reduce the effects of natural disasters. We can make a difference. 2. Objective The objective of this project is to instil reverence to Mother Nature and raise Environmental Awareness/Consciousness in particular amongst children, their parents and teachers of the Sai family in Malaysia. To do this a target has been set to plant and protect 85,000 trees in Malaysia. Tree planting and its protection will benefit not only humans but the planet earth. This is because trees are oxygen filters (they give us oxygen, consumes carbon dioxide and cleans the air in the process), shelter and food providers to humans as well as animals and can influence climate. Planting trees can help to combat climate change and reduce the effects of natural disasters. These are just some of the major benefits of tree planting and protection. Participants in this Programme will learn to appreciate mother nature and spiritualise their contribution towards making the earth a more liveable place. 3. Implementation Tree seedlings shall be propagated in a spiritually charged environment of our homes and Sai Centres throughout the country. The trees shall be planted in locations where it will be welcomed, nurtured and allowed to achieve its full growth potential. These trees shall fulfill their destiny vis-à-vis providing shade, colour, fragrance and fruits at different stages of their lives. This project is made up of four phases: i. Phase 1- Awareness Lesson plans on life-cycle. For an example it takes 30 to 45 days for leafy vegetables to grow from seed to the cooking pot! Young children can learn about how seeds become alive. They also will learn the function and connectivity between soil, air, water and sunlight. Planting can be spiritualized by Gayathri chanting. Full-grown plants (organically grown) can be consumed by the family and given to friends. The children will understand joy of giving. Older children can work with fruiting vegetables such as pepper (“cili”), tomatoes, egg-plant (brinjals) and lady-fingers. ii. Phase 2 – Family nurseries Encourage families to nurture tree seedlings in their homes.
SAI-CARE An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building Provide the children with poly-bags and compost and followed by the seedlings. They are to take care of the growth of seedlings for 3 months. Repeat over next 18 months. Phase 2A Identify potential planting locations in their neighbourhood, homes, parks or other public areas. iii. Phase 3 Planting, recording and monitoring. Work with other organisations, residents associations. iv. Phase 4 Develop Voluntary CER processes and Carbon Offset proposals with Sai School as beneficiary. 4. Expected Outcome • General understanding about trees and its importance in their surroundings. • Do’s and Dont’s when they interact with plants. • Genuine tree planting campaign with long term environmental benefit • Potential revenue generation for Sai school 5.
