SAI-CARE An Offering for Humanity and Nation Building C. 2. Free Surgeries Project Reference : Service Project Name : Free Surgeries Programme (Wing) Leader : Bro Mahendran Project Leader : Sis Dr. Renu 1. Introduction The surgical project, which will be effective from 01/08/08 will incorporate all aspects of major as well as minor surgery. Surgeries will be carried out without incurring excessive cost to the poor patients. A special team of specialists will form the Surgical <strong>Action</strong> Committee. 2. Objective 1. To identify & provide free surgery to the hardcore poor and underprivileged people irrespective of race & religion. 2. To bring relief, joy, happiness and permanent benefit to the underprivileged, and relieve financial burden of the family members. 3. Implementation a) The selection of the patient should be confined to hard core poor whose financial position will never be able to finance such operations. b) The patient should be one who has been diagnosed previously and thus a confirmed case. c) Initial liaison and groundwork must be carefully and closely carried out with the approval and assistance of state medical officers to identify patients. Initial medical reports, x-rays etc. should be requested. d) The patients, place of residence, the earning power, family financial position etc. must be thoroughly examined. e) The surgical project must serve all races. f) It is imperative that the patient who is identified and his family members are given a clear understanding of the process of approval and final decision so that no false hope can be concluded by any of them. g) Colour photograph of patient should accompany the application form. h) The post operative care will be provided by SAI volunteers up to a time when the patient is well and fit after which all follow-up care and attention will be referred to the nearest government hospital of the patient. Referral letter will be provided. Identification of patients a) Letters will be sent to all centre chairman and state coordinators throughout the country to inform them of this noble project. Guidelines will be issued as to the criteria for selection. b) Letters will be sent to welfare departments throughout the country informing them of this project and requesting them to identify cases that need major surgery. c) Letters will be sent to the press and there will a complete coverage on this project in The Star & New Straits Times during the early period of year 2009. By then all protocol and areas will be ready for the surgery.

Project Outcome At the end of the SaiCare Programme Period, a total of 129 surgeries had been provided to needy recipients, and the details are as below: KEDAH PENANG PERAK CENTRAL MALACCA / NS JOHOR TOTAL 1 5 2 43 20 58 129 The beneficiaries from this Project were as follows: Chinese 4% Indians 18% Malays 20% Foreigners 58% Foreigners Indians Malays Chinese The types of surgeries carried out were as shown below: Paediatric, 5 Orthopaedic, 10 Gynaecology, 34 Eye, 59 Caesarian, 20
