3 VIENNA: REACHING BEYOND ITS BORDERS<br />
the Siemens City project completed in 2010. Outstanding<br />
development perspectives are moreover<br />
offered by aspern Vienna’s Urban Lakeside as a<br />
smart city lab, the former Novartis site in Liesing<br />
and the upcoming industrial site near the new<br />
Vienna North Hospital.<br />
Tying in with these approaches and successes,<br />
Vienna can forge ahead to become an even more<br />
advanced knowledge-based service hub. New<br />
and modern industrial sites as well as attractive<br />
venues for science and research, office and retail<br />
locations well-connected to the public transport<br />
network and space for the creative industries<br />
are all to be developed. Existing sites are safeguarded;<br />
potential functional deficits are eliminated,<br />
and new locations are planned as integral<br />
parts of urban expansion; in the built city, the<br />
possibilities for housing, work, research, production<br />
and commerce to exist side by side are<br />
improved as well. In this process, the following<br />
aspects in particular are at the focus:<br />
