3.3.3 Kales
Kale is the most popular leafy vegetables consumed in the country, because of its short production cycle and high productivity. In 2014, the area under production of Kales
was 24,422 ha which produced 348,637MT with a value of Kshs 4.8 billion. Though the area under production increased by 1 percent production decreased by 1 percent
respectively as compared to 2013, but value increased by 13 percent due to a rise in the prices from Kshs 12 to Kshs 14 per kg.
The leading counties in kale production were Kiambu accounting for 23 percent followed by Kisii, Nyeri and Nyamira which accounted for 9.8 and 4 percent respectively.
Kiambu County recorded the highest farm gate price with an average price of Kshs 28 per Kilo and this was attributed to its proximity to Nairobi.
