6.4.2 Agricultural Technology Development Centres (ATDC)<br />

These centers were established in 1986 as Rural Technology Development Centers and rebranded into ATDC. The<br />

establishment <strong>of</strong> the centres was supposed to address the challenges <strong>of</strong> on farm mechanization, value addition, and<br />

post-harvest management for small to medium scale farmers. Following devolution, the changed mandate <strong>of</strong> ATDCs<br />

is to assist the National Government in influencing policy applications, monitoring and evaluations in agricultural<br />

subsector. The centers are distributed across the country based on ecological zones.<br />

6.4.3 Validated technologies promoted<br />

Land preparation equipments includes:-<br />

i. Ploughing:- Animal draft plough with ridger, cultivators; walking 18HP tractor with metal wheels, moldboard<br />

plough, trailer, other small tractors and attachments plough, ridger, and trailer and power tillers; animal drawn<br />

equipment with attachments zim-plough, rippers, cultivator and sub-soiler;<br />

ii. Rotavation:- Walking 18HP tractor with rotavator;<br />

iii. Planting: - Hand jab planters, animal drawn no-till seeder and animal drawn precision planters,<br />

iv. Crop protection equipments:- Manual zim-wipers for herbicides, manual drawn sprayers and animal drawn<br />

boom sprayers.<br />

v. Conservation <strong>Agriculture</strong> equipments:- Small tractor 16hp with CA direct seeder, sub soiler, trailer, and boom<br />

sprayer.<br />
