ProbleM stateMent<br />
There was no prenatal screening for birth anomalies<br />
especially in the government sector in this country<br />
with few excepti<strong>on</strong>s. Ultrasound is a n<strong>on</strong>-invasive<br />
technique of identifying some of the comm<strong>on</strong> birth defects<br />
during antenatal visits by the pregnant mother but is not<br />
used for identificati<strong>on</strong> of birth defects routinely.<br />
PrograMMe DescriPti<strong>on</strong><br />
Started<br />
First Phase: 2010-2013 and Sec<strong>on</strong>d Phase: Since April 2014.<br />
Area and populati<strong>on</strong> covered in<br />
• Phase 1: 2010-2013: in 30 districts, 504 doctors of<br />
256 PHCs screened 149600 cases approximately and<br />
detected 1648 anomalies.<br />
• Phase 2: April 2014: planned for 105 CEmONC centres,<br />
16 Medical college hospitals and 154 Block PHCs at 30<br />
districts.<br />
the following activities were d<strong>on</strong>e under the interventi<strong>on</strong><br />
a. Establishing the hardware: Computers/laptops are<br />
provided at the centre with net c<strong>on</strong>nectivity.<br />
b. Installing a dedicated software which will ensure<br />
auditing of all the images.<br />
c. Orientati<strong>on</strong> of the doctors, <strong>on</strong>line theoretical course<br />
and mentoring of each doctor for the next 18 m<strong>on</strong>ths<br />
to validate their findings.<br />
d. Software m<strong>on</strong>itoring the number of scans d<strong>on</strong>e, quality<br />
of scans and finally the diagnosis of each of the trained<br />
doctors and a rating is d<strong>on</strong>e for each trainee.<br />
e. Tracking of the positive cases and their outcome<br />
through software.<br />
The training objectives of this project are to train the<br />
participants in Pregnancy dating, to identify most comm<strong>on</strong><br />
malformati<strong>on</strong>s, to diagnose IUGR, identify Placenta previa,<br />
assess Liquor abnormalities, know when to refer to higher<br />
centre and absorbing and tracking the outcome.<br />
PrograMMe outcoMes<br />
• Increase the skills of the Obstetricians to detect<br />
fetal abnormalities and to identify other gestati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
problems.<br />
• Increase the skills of the Medical Officers from PHC<br />
in the usage of ultrasound during the screening of<br />
antenatal mothers so as to detect high-risk pregnancies<br />
and fetal abnormalities.<br />
• Preventing and managing birth defects.<br />
• Identificati<strong>on</strong> of high-risk pregnancies for appropriate<br />
and early referral.<br />

financial investMent<br />
Approximately the cost of training each medical officer is<br />
Rs. 46,500/- for a period of 18 m<strong>on</strong>ths. The required funds<br />
are provided through the State plan as well as NHM.<br />

This programme can be implemented in any of the States.<br />
It can be linked with a genetic lab service facilities and<br />
RBSk.<br />

The scientific technology of Ultrasound could be used for<br />
improving the outcome of pregnancy in respect to both<br />
mother and child. This would also reduce the burden of<br />
birth defects.<br />
