In December 2007 Telecom Italia started a <strong>NGA</strong>N trial in Milan with a FTTB-GPON<br />

architecture (50 Mb/s downstream). During the second quarter of 2009 Telecom Italia<br />

started testing <strong>NGA</strong>N in Rome with a FTTH-GPON architecture and the access speed<br />

reached 100 Mb/s (the experimental retail offer is called “ALICE PHIBRA”).<br />

In February 20<strong>11</strong> Agcom, with resolution n. 61/<strong>11</strong>/CONS, approved Telecom Italia 100<br />

Mb/s offer. This offer, at a first stage, will be available only to 40.000 customers in 7<br />

Italian main cities (Milano, Torino, Genova, Bologna, Roma, Napoli and Bari).<br />

1.1.2 Announced roll-out plans<br />

� Has the incumbent announced roll-out plans for <strong>NGA</strong> networks? For which period? When<br />

answering this question consider the aspects addressed mentioned in 1.1.1.<br />

The main elements of Telecom Italia plans for <strong>NGA</strong> networks are:<br />

� Until 2012 the deployment will be focused in the main 14 metropolitan cities, adopting<br />

FTTH solution (FTTB as a backup solution);<br />

� Endorsement of civil infrastructures sharing;<br />

� Proposal for a complete switch off of copper network in Milan, to be achieved by 2015<br />

and by 2018 in 3 other main cities;<br />

� Telecom Italia estimates to cover 10 millions of households (i.e. about 50% of Italian<br />

citizens) by 2018;<br />

� By December 2010 Telecom Italia intends to launch a commercial offer for FTTH at<br />

100Mb/s in 6 Italian main cities.<br />

1.2 Competitors (other telcos, cable)<br />
