NO TWO ARE ALIKE. THE
Essex House hotel looks like
the bow of a transatlantic
ship with its flowing shapes
whereas straight lines dominate
the Clevelander and
the rounded corners of the
Cardozo seem surprising.
The Cavalier offers attractive
friezes on the facade and
the Delano hotel grabs people’s
attention because of its
modular structure. However,
if it’s really about getting
people’s attention, there’s
the Leslie, with a yellow color
that can be seen from faraway
streets just like the blue
on Park Central Hotel. Despite
their differences, these
buildings all found within a
few short blocks at the end
of South Beach seem to all
have something in common,
especially as they share the
same origin and intention:
to attract tourists and make
them forget the grey days of
the Great Depression.
The best thing about it is that
this pioneer session in color
therapy continues to have
the same effect. As you walk
along Ocean Drive under a
dazzling sky and monumental
palm trees, surrounded
by the crowd of diverse
people and bangs from the
old restored Cadillacs and
Fords, it’s still easy to forget
that way beyond the happy
and fun-loving rainbow that
is the Art Deco District in
Miami, there continues to be
a world in crisis.
Faced with such overdoses
of vitality, it’s hard to believe
there was nothing at
all here just over a hundred
years ago. Possibly only the
long-lost footprints of Pedro
Menedez de Avilés, an
Asturian who explored the
mouth of the Miami River
back in 1566, and the echo
