ESCAPE

cine y teatro. Hoy aloja a la
sinfónica de Miami. / The
Lincoln building (1936), was
a cinema and theater. Today
it is home to the Miami
Symphonic Orchestra.
Aunque también dejó su sello
en otros lugares de América,
como en el remate de la Torre
Chrysler de Nueva York o el
Cristo del Corcovado en Río de
Janeiro, en ningún otro sitio se
conserva una concentración
comparable en cantidad y calidad
a la del Art Déco District de Miami. Pero a punto estuvo
de no ser así. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, turistas y jubilados
empezaron a buscar otras zonas de la costa, los hoteles
languidecieron y el barrio acabó convertido en un nido
de marginalidad. Afortunadamente, un grupo de artistas y
vecinos inició en los años 70 una campaña para salvar de la
demolición los viejos edificios y emprender su restauración.
El color volvió poco a poco a las fachadas, los interiores sacaron
brillo a sus cromados y los neones despertaron la alegría
y el alboroto de antaño.
Hoy, desde el Art Déco District Welcome Center se organizan
tours para recorrer la veintena de manzanas más
divertida de Miami. También se puede pasear sin más por

Ocean Drive, arriba y abajo
entre la gente, o desayunar
en alguna cafetería vintage,
tumbarse un rato en la playa
y escapar del calor con un
cóctel cargado de nostalgia
chic en el bar de uno de los
muchos hoteles con vistas al
mar. Otro plan es dedicar el
día a conocer otros barrios
de Miami, como la Pequeña
Habana, el lujoso Coral Gables
o las calles bohemias
de Coconut Grove. Y, por
qué no, escaparse a DisneyWorld
para ver a Mickey
o al parque nacional de los
Everglades para ver caimanes.
Cualquier plan es bueno
siempre que se regrese a
Ocean Drive a la puesta del
sol, cuando los letreros de
neón se suman a esa misión
encomiable que se impuso
Miami desde sus orígenes, y
que no es otra que alejar las
sombras y teñir el mundo
de color.

After World War II, tourists
and retired seniors began
searching for other coastal
areas. The hotels languished
and the neighborhood became
a bit of a ghetto. Fortunately,
a group of artists and
residents began a campaign
back in the 1970’s to save the
old buildings from demolition
and took up their restoration.
The color gradually
came back to the facades,
the interior chrome plating
began to shine again and the
neon awoke the long-lost
happiness and racket.
Nowadays, tours of the most
enjoyable twenty blocks in
Miami are organized at the
Art Deco District Welcome
Center. You can also simply
take a walk along Ocean
Drive, down and back among
the people, or have breakfast
at a vintage café, lie down
awhile on the beach and escape
the heat with a cocktail
loaded with chic nostalgia
at one of the many seafront
hotel bars. Another good
plan is dedicated a whole day
to discovering other Miami
neighborhoods like Little
Havana, the luxurious Coral
Cables or the bohemian
streets of Coconut Grove.
And why not take off for Disney
World to see Mickey or
Everglades National Park to
see caimans. Any plan is a
good one as long as you return
to Ocean Drive as the
sun goes down when the
neon signs join the laudable
mission Miami took up from
the very beginning which
is no other than to get away
from all the darkness and
paint the world with a fantastic
color.
