una corriente artística
nueva, una amalgama de
estilos que algunos definieron
como un art nouveau
sometido al filtro de
la modernidad y que, con el
tiempo, adoptaría el sonoro
nombre de art déco. Era
un estilo alegre, optimista,
que apostaba por materiales
como el aluminio o el acero
inoxidable, las simetrías de
las máquinas y las formas
aerodinámicas de la aviación,
el uso de luces eléctricas,
los neones y los colores
pastel. Con esas credenciales,
no sorprende que fuera
el elegido por los arquitectos
para levantar los ánimos
después del crack de la Bolsa
de 1929, que tuvo una de
sus causas precisamente en
el estallido de la burbuja inmobiliaria
de Florida. Durante
la década de los años
30, muchos de los hoteles
que fueron construidos a lo
largo de South Beach optaron
por el art déco.

steel, the symmetry of machines
and the aerodynamic
shapes seen in aviation,
electric lights, and neon and
pastel colors. With these
credentials, it’s no surprise
that it was chosen by architects
to lift up people’s spirits
after the Stock Market Crash
in 1929, which was actually
partially caused by the burst
of the real estate bubble in
Florida. During the 1930’s,
many of the hotels built
along South Beach chose
to use an art deco style. Although
it also left its mark on
other places in the Americas
such as the top of the Chrysler
Building in New York
and Christ the Redeemer
atop Corcovado Hill in Rio
de Janeiro, there is no such
concentration in any other
place comparable in quantity
and quality to Miami’s
Art Deco District. But this

complemento perfecto a los
hoteles y clubes de Ocean
Drive. El resultado es una
pasarela perfecta para ver y
dejarse ver, caminar por la

arena o patinar por el paseo,
jugar al vóley o tomar el
sol. Y todo sin olvidarse del
art déco, que extiende sus
tentáculos desde el cuartel
general de la Beach Patrol
y convierte los puestos de
los socorristas en boyas.

star, that would be South
Beach, which is between
the Atlantic blue and the
green of Lummus Park - the
accessory for all the Ocean
Drive hotels and pubs. The
result is the perfect place
to see and be seen, strolling
along the sand or skating
along the boardwalk, playing
volleyball or taking in the
sun. All without turning
your back on the art deco,
which has extended its
tentacles from the Beach
Patrol headquarters to
transforming the lifeguards’
stations into buoys.
