Advanced considerations of
IEC 60870-5
Objectives
This chapter presents the following advanced considerations in the use of IEC 60870-5:
• Application level functions
• Interoperability
• Networked version IEC 60870-5-104
In this text the features of the IEC 60870-5 protocol are presented and described.
The descriptions presented are intended to assist understanding by users of equipment
implementing the protocol. Original equipment manufacturers for such systems, and anyone
requiring a complete understanding of all aspects of the protocol should refer to the
actual IEC standards for complete details, and for possible future amendments.
9.1 Application functions
Application functions are implemented by the user process layer of both controlling
and controlled stations. Operating interactively and using the communications system
including the link and physical communications layers, they make up an overall process
that implements SCADA operations.
In the following sub-sections the main functions are described. These functions are
specified in detail by IEC 60870-5-101, which largely refers to and makes selections from
IEC 60870-5-5.
