again, how many bytes again (32) and the time (< 2 ms) each response took to come back.
TTL is time to live equals 32. This number would decrease if the response went through
a router.
Note: The Ping will only work on one network.
Implementation/ARP
ARP (address resolution protocol) is used to find the MAC (media access control) physical
address of the Ethernet card of another computer on the network. It will also tell the user
the route the packets took for a response. The ARP is used after a Ping. First Ping an IP
address of another computer as shown below.
(Note: You can use a different address)
Then type the following..
The Interface is your IP address. The Internet Address is the source of the response and
then its Physical Address. The Type is the type of IP allocated addressing. Dynamic means
that the ARP list will not be held forever. After a few minutes the ARP will need more traffic
to update its live list.
Note: The Pinging and ARP will also be used in Practical 3 (Subnet masking).
1.1 3.7 Implementation/PacketBoy
The NDG’s PacketBoy software program is just one of a suite of programs that allow the
network user or manager a view of what is happening on the network. PacketBoy shows
detailed information about every aspect of the packets that are being sent back and forth
between computers.
