What is the programme about?<br />

This programme offers students a combination of technological, business and management skills specifically<br />

related to the automotive/ transport industry.<br />

Graduates of this programme will have the concepts and ideas that will allow them to develop the necessary<br />

competency to become technicians and managers in today’s automotive and transport industry. Transportation<br />

technology has been identified by government as a key issue in maintaining and enhancing the<br />

competitiveness of our economy in the decades ahead.<br />

Who is the programme suited to?<br />

This programme is ideal for people who have an interest in cars and other motorised vehicles. You will study<br />

how they work, from the complexity of modern engines to the electrical, braking, steering and all the other<br />

ancillary systems of a vehicle. This is a programme involving a good amount of ‘hands-on’ work with plenty of<br />

garage workshop exercises and experiments.<br />

Year 1: Automobile Engineering & Vehicle Technology 1, Mechanical Engineering Science, Introduction to<br />

Mechanical Engineering Maths, Automobile Electrics & Electronics 1, Engineering Computing,<br />

Entrepreneurship & Business Development, Computer Aided Drawing.<br />

Year 2: Automobile Engineering & Vehicle Technology 2, Automobile Electrics & Electronics 2, Vehicle<br />

Science, Computing Automotive, Motor Retail Management, Automotive Engineering Mathematics.<br />

What can I do after the programme?<br />

Graduates of this programme can progress to a Level 7 Bachelor of Engineering in Road Transport Technology<br />

& Management at <strong>LIT</strong>.<br />

With a mix of skills offered on this programme, students have more versatility in the jobs available after<br />

graduation. Job opportunities for graduates include: Automobile Service Technician, Service Manager, Parts<br />

Manager, Warranty Manager, Auto Electrics Technician, Technical Salesman, Technical Sales Rep, and Motor<br />

Vehicle Technician.<br />

Graduates can apply for membership to the Institute of Road Transport Engineering and the Institute of the<br />

Motor Industry (UK) where they will be awarded ‘Certified Automotive Engineer’ status (CAE).<br />

Minimum Entry Requirements:<br />

Leaving Certificate: A minimum of 5<br />

O6/H7 grades in Leaving Certificate<br />

subjects, including Mathematics and<br />

English or Irish.<br />

QQI FET/FETAC Applicants & Mature<br />

Applicants: Refer to section ‘Entry<br />

Requirements’ for further information.<br />

Candidates who hold a Senior Trade<br />

Certificate and/or National Craft Certificate<br />

with appropriate endorsements or<br />

examination attainments in a cognate area will<br />

also be considered for entry, subject to a<br />

satisfactory interview. Holders of a<br />

National/Higher Certificate (Level 6) in<br />

Engineering or Technology may be considered<br />

for admission to Year 2 or 3 of these<br />

programmes. Candidates applying as mature<br />

applicants will be required to attend an<br />

interview and may be requested to take an<br />

aptitude test to prove their suitability for a<br />

place on this programme.<br />
