What is the programme about?<br />
The healthcare industry in Ireland and internationally is growing exponentially and the use of sophisticated<br />
medical technology and instrumentation has created a demand for specialized, well trained graduates in the<br />
emerging field of Medical Technology. The overall purpose of the programme is to provide students with the<br />
opportunity to pursue a multidisciplinary programme of study and meet the growing demand for technologists<br />
with specialist skills in Medical Technology.<br />
This programme will allow the student to combine a broad knowledge of science, medical, electrical/electronic<br />
principles with the specific knowledge required for the applications of medical technology as an integral<br />
member of the healthcare team. Basic Emergency Medical training is also provided as part of the programme.<br />
You may also gain a parallel award as an accredited Emergency First Responder.<br />
Who is the programme suited to?<br />
This programme is designed for students who have a keen interest in science, technology and medicine and<br />
who wish to pursue successful careers in the dynamic and fast emerging field of Medical Technology. You will<br />
have small class sizes, dedicated lecturers, and gain hands-on experience of state of the art medical<br />
technologies as they are used in hospital, healthcare and industry settings.<br />

Year 1: Cell & Molecular Biology, Applied Chemistry, Principles of Medical Care, Mathematics & Information<br />
Technology, Medical Physics, Electrical Engineering Principles, Introduction to Electronics.<br />
Year 2: Anatomy & Physiology, Clinical Biochemistry & Medical Microbiology, Medical Technology &<br />
Clinical Applications I, Mathematics for Medical Technology, Medical Instrumentation & Calibration, Medical<br />
Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Electrical & Instrumentation Drawing (CAD).<br />
Year 3: Medical Management & Emergency Care (Elective 1) Medical Technology Project (Elective 2),<br />
Medical Technology and Clinical Applications 2, Quality Assurance, Validation and Statistics, Automation &<br />
Information Systems for Medical Technology, HMI & SCADA, On-site Placement & Portfolio.<br />
What can I do after the programme?<br />
The programme content has been carefully developed in conjunction with medical and industrial partners to<br />
develop a specific skill set relevant to employment in Medical Technology support roles. The programme offers<br />
you excellent employment opportunities and career prospects in key areas within the healthcare sector<br />
including Hospitals and other Healthcare Providers, in addition to industry roles in medical equipment<br />
manufacture, service, sales and distribution.<br />
Graduates may progress to the one year add-on Level 8 Honours Degree in Medical Technology. Graduates<br />
(with Year 3, Elective 1 module) will also be eligible to undertake the external examinations of the Pre-Hospital<br />
Emergency Care Council and become an accredited Emergency Medical Technician.<br />
