What is the programme about?<br />
This programme provides students with the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of today’s IT industry.<br />
Software is everywhere; on the Internet, on your mobile phone, on your games console, managing your bank<br />
account, and more. This programme focuses on Software Engineering and Software Development techniques<br />
(Object Orientation, Java, Web Development, C#, Mobile Apps, Cloud etc.).<br />
With the mix of skills this programme provides, students will be ideally positioned to secure employment in<br />
either Open Source or .NET technology jobs as a: Software Engineer, Software Developer (Java, C#, .Net),<br />
Software Engineering/Modelling (UML, Junit, mockito, cucumber, GIT, Docker, Jenkins), Web<br />
Designer/Developer (DreamWeaver, CS5, PHP), Database Developer/Administrator (SQL Server, MySQL), Test<br />
Engineer, Games and Mobile App Developer (XNA, Android).<br />
In addition, the six month paid work placement in Year 3 gives students an opportunity to apply the skills<br />
learned at <strong>LIT</strong> in a real working environment. This will provide students with valuable experience prior to full<br />
time employment on graduation.<br />
Who is the programme suited to?<br />
This programme suits people who are analytical and logical and who are interested in computers and like<br />
solving real problems. It also suits people who are creative as the programme gives students the skills to<br />
express their ideas and concepts in a whole range of software technologies.<br />
Minimum Entry Requirements:<br />
Leaving Certificate: A minimum of 2 H5<br />
& 4 O6/H7 grades in six Leaving<br />
Certificate subjects), including<br />
Mathematics and English or Irish.<br />

The programme is semesterised and modules over the four years cover the areas of: Professional<br />
Development, Programming, Algorithms, Databases & Data Analytics, Software Testing & Quality, Web<br />
Technology, Computer Systems, Mobile App Development, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Systems, Web<br />
Applications, Individual & Team Projects.<br />
Work Placement<br />
Students spend 6 months in Year 3 on a work related placement.<br />
What can I do after the programme?<br />
Software Development is a key enabler and driver of innovation across a multitude of industries and there<br />
really is a need for graduates who are technically aware but who can also see the opportunities that the<br />
technology allows.<br />
This programme provides the skills and knowledge enabling graduates to embark on rewarding and exciting<br />
careers where they can express their creativity through software. Job opportunities for graduates include work<br />
as: Software Developer/ Software Engineer.<br />
Graduates work for: Ericsson, Microsoft, Cisco, Avvio, Lumension, Kerry Foods, OpenJaw Technologies, IBM<br />
Global Services, Deloitte, Amazon, Intel, Johnson & Johnson, Dell. Graduates of the programme can also<br />
