Support Services for Students<br />

Student Health Unit<br />

A free, confidential nursing service is available to all full-time<br />

registered students at <strong>LIT</strong>. Institute Doctors are available to<br />

students at specific times. Where a nurse is available on<br />

campus, all appointments for the doctor must be made at the<br />

Student Health Unit through the nurse. The fee for the doctor<br />

is €10 for registered students and free for Medical Card<br />

holders outside of a 5mile radius of <strong>LIT</strong>. Students can also<br />

consult local notice boards across the campuses for further<br />

Student Counselling Service<br />

<strong>LIT</strong> offers a free, confidential and professional counselling<br />

service, staffed by highly qualified and experienced<br />

psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors to all<br />

registered students.<br />

Our aim is to provide accessible, available and studentfriendly<br />

support for students when a personal crisis arises<br />

which affects their wellbeing, happiness, capacity to cope,<br />

relationships or learning.<br />

Counselling services provided include:<br />

• Short term counselling for personal issues including crisis<br />

and emergency appointments.<br />

• Support groups to support you in areas of mindfulness<br />

and overcoming anxiety.<br />

• Wellbeing workshops in self-esteem, enhancing social<br />

skills, relaxation and managing stress.<br />

• Positive mental health promotion initiatives and mental<br />

health awareness campaigns.<br />

Careers Service<br />

<strong>LIT</strong> offers a Careers Service which assists students with all<br />

aspects of career planning and the transition from study to the<br />

working world. Workshops and seminars relating to key<br />

employability skills take place throughout the academic year.<br />

These include CV preparation, interview techniques and<br />

networking. Arrangements are also made for companies to<br />

meet with students in the Institute, including at the annual <strong>LIT</strong><br />

Careers and Further Options Fair.<br />

<strong>LIT</strong> graduates are in high demand and are recognised<br />

regionally and nationally for having a high level of technical<br />

and commercial expertise with multiple career opportunities.<br />

Access Service<br />

<strong>LIT</strong> is committed to promoting equitable access to and<br />

successful participation in higher education for all members<br />

of society. Through the work of the <strong>LIT</strong> Access Service,<br />

targeted strategies and initiatives are delivered so as to<br />

facilitate entry to and successful participation in higher<br />

education for underrepresented students. The successful<br />

realisation of the widening participation agenda also requires<br />

that students’ progress in their academic studies and move<br />

into graduate employment.<br />

Primarily, the Access service works with the following groups:<br />

• Students who experience socio-economic disadvantage<br />

• Students with a Disability and/or Specific Learning<br />

Difficulty<br />

• Mature Students<br />

• Traveller and Ethnic Minorities<br />

The Access service delivers a range of support programmes<br />

to promote access that include:<br />

• A mature student orientation programme. Mature students<br />

are also supported through a Mature Student Support<br />

Network, and relevant academic workshops tailored to<br />

address the needs of mature students so that they get the<br />

most out of their studies.<br />

• Financial guidance and support through the ESF Student<br />

Assistance Fund. The Student Assistance Fund is funded<br />

by the Irish Government and part funded by the European<br />

Social Fund under the Human Capital Investment<br />

Operational Programme.<br />

• Support and guidance for students who have a disability or<br />

a specific learning difficulty and provision of disability<br />

needs assessment and relevant supports.<br />

• A Mentoring Service whereby all first year students are<br />

assigned a mentor that comprise of staff from across the<br />

Institute, the aim of which is to enhance the student<br />

learning experience in an ongoing supportive relationship<br />

that encourages students to stay committed to their<br />

studies and to reach their educational goals.<br />

• Go4IT Access programme - a pre-entry initiative that<br />

engages with primary and secondary school children as<br />

they progress through education to third level.<br />

• Student volunteering provision that includes training,<br />

support and recognition through the GIVE (Guided<br />

Initiative in Voluntary Engagement) volunteering<br />

programme.<br />
