What is the programme about?<br />

This programme has been designed in consultation with employers, so its content is relevant to employment in<br />

the development sector in Ireland. There is a substantial practical component to this programme so students<br />

will develop the real skills and competencies required for the workplace. A practical placement in years two and<br />

three is a key element of the programme which will allow students apply their learning in a real-life environment.<br />

Students on this programme will develop competencies and skills that will enable them to enter careers in<br />

development and social inclusion work. Students will develop practical skills based on the study and analysis<br />

of Irish Society and Irish communities; the social, economic and political issues affecting Irish society and<br />

different social groups; the role of development in addressing poverty, inequality and social exclusion; the<br />

impact of global processes on Irish society.<br />

Potential Applicants please note: This programme specialises in Community Development and as such it<br />

does not offer a specialisation or qualification in Social Care. All applicants accepting a place on this<br />

programme will be required to obtain Garda Clearance prior to full registration on the programme.<br />

Who is the programme suited to?<br />

Students with their Creative Studies project<br />

This programme will be of interest to students interested in working in the areas of community development,<br />

the voluntary sector or in social inclusion.<br />

Year 1: Semester 1: Introduction to Community Work 1, Interpersonal Communication, Active Citizenship &<br />

Volunteering, Applied Research & Writing Skills, Political Ideology, Introduction to Homelessness (Elective),<br />

Introduction to Working with Vulnerable Young People (Elective).<br />

Semester 2: Introduction to Community Work 2, Introduction to Group-Work, Politics in Ireland,<br />

Introduction to Creative Studies, Introduction to Sociology, Psychology 1.<br />

Year 2: Semester 3: Professional Development, Social Policy, Models of Community Work 1, Organisation<br />

Behaviour in the Community Sector, Psychology 2, Group-Work 2, Poverty & Policy.<br />

Semester 4: Inequality & Policy, Organisation Behaviour in the Community Sector, Social Policy & Provision,<br />

Facilitation Skills in Community Work, Management in the C&V Sector, Models of Community Work 2.<br />

Year 3: Semester 5: Professional Placement (15 weeks)<br />

Semester 6: Sociology & Diversity, Psychology of Stress & Distress, Professional Development, Project<br />

Management for Community Groups, Quantitative Research Methods, Qualitative Research Methods.<br />

Year 4: Research Thesis, Sociology in Practise, Participatory Techniques in Community Work, Training &<br />

Development Skills, Governance & Programme Management in the Community & Voluntary Sector, Current<br />

Issues in Community Work, Global Development Theories & Practice, & there are two electives to choose<br />

from - Practice Social Enterprise or Psychology in Practice: Approaches to Addiction.<br />

What can I do after the programme?<br />

There are increasing opportunities for paid professional work and career progression within the community<br />

and voluntary sector. Graduates will be eligible to work in various roles in the development sector including:<br />

Community Development Worker/Coordinator, Community Youth Worker, Policy Worker, Social<br />

Researcher/Research Assistant, Group Worker/Facilitator. Some graduates work for Family Resource Centres,<br />

LEADER companies, An Garda Síochána.<br />
