This boiler system uses the waste to cool off blowdown thus saving city water. No salt or other chemicals are needed, however, the costs of replacement membranes, the electricity needed to pump the water through the membranes, and the excess higher concentration waste water all need to be calculated in when considering this form of water treatment. Slime Buildup on RO Membrane Fouling With chlorine removed, membranes are a great place for bacteria slime to grow which can plug up the system. Non-Oxidizing Biological Control Chemicals do not damage RO membranes. They are typically much more expensive than the oxidizing type. Scale Buildup on RO Membrane Organic phosphates disrupt crystal formation and extend the time between membrane changeout.
