Fluidized Bed Fluidized Bed Bubbling Because of continual movement of the bed, there is a significant improvement of air contact with fuel. As compared to other types of burners, fluidized beds can achieve complete combustion of solid fuels at a lower overall temperature. Lower temperature burning = lower NOx emissions. Circulating CFB = Circulating Fluidized Bed With a greater air flow, high temperature sand travels with exhaust gasses. This allows more time for heat transfer. Sand returns to bed via separator. With a more uniform temperature throughout the entire furnace and higher air flow to lift and suspend burning solids, CFBs enable use of more diverse, larger mass particles, and higher moisture content fuel sources. Since a more gradual heat transfer takes place over a larger distance, excessive flame temperature can be avoided, and NO x emissions are significantly reduced. P a g e 93
