Surface blowdown b Surface Blowdown : High TDS can increase surface tension of water creating bubbles with “super skins”, increasing chances of priming (boiler water escaping as droplets and traveling with steam), carryover (solids resulting from priming) and bouncing (fast irregular fluctuations in boiler water level). Best TDS control, bubbles are popping on the surface leaving their solids behind (highest TDS concentration in boiler). If MAWP (Maximum Allowable Working Pressure) >100 then 2 blowdown valves are needed To protect boiler from sudden, excessive changes in pressure, maximum blowdown pipe size = 2½ in. Reversed order Two slow opening valves Fast valve should be closest to boiler Slow valve should be secondary to boiler Visual flow viewport Most boilers are equipped with a series of two blowdown valves. Always open the one closest to the boiler first and close it last. Any cavitation damage that may occur will happen on the valve that is easier to replace.
