(or possibly a small increase) when compared to the 2014 census<br />
when it was estimated to number about 930 caribou.<br />
COSEWIC Assessment and possible listing under Species at<br />
Risk Act<br />
The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada<br />
(COSEWIC) completed an assessment of the status of Canada’s<br />
caribou populations. The assessment regroups different herds into<br />
‘Designatable Units’ (DUs) based on a number of factors including<br />
historical range, genetic composition, etc. For Nunavik, this<br />
translates to two DUs: Eastern Migratory Caribou (including Leaf<br />
River and George River herds) and the Torngat Mountains Caribou.<br />
RDD staff reviewed and provided comments on multiple drafts<br />
of the COSEWIC assessment, each time questioning the rationale<br />
for grouping the Leaf River and George River herds. In the end,<br />
COSEWIC recommended that both DUs be listed as Endangered<br />
under Canada’s Species at Risk Act. The Minister of Environment<br />
must undertake consultations with Nunavik Inuit before rendering<br />
a final decision. Consultations were planned for September <strong>2018</strong>,<br />
but have been postponed.<br />

Évaluation du COSEPAC et inscription possible en vertu de la Loi<br />
sur les espèces en péril<br />
Le Comité sur la situation des espèces en péril au Canada<br />
(COSEPAC) a achevé l’évaluation de la situation des populations<br />
de caribou du Canada. L’évaluation regroupe différents troupeaux<br />
en « unités désignables » (UD) selon divers facteurs, notamment<br />
l’aire de répartition historique et la composition génétique. Au<br />
Nunavik, cela représente deux UD, soit les caribous migrateurs de<br />
l’Est (incluant les troupeaux de la rivière aux Feuilles et de la rivière<br />
George) et les caribous des monts Torngat. Le personnel du SDR a<br />
fourni des commentaires sur plusieurs versions de l’évaluation du<br />
COSEPAC, remettant à chaque fois en question le regroupement<br />
des troupeaux de la rivière aux Feuilles et de la rivière George.<br />
Ultimement, le COSEPAC a recommandé que les deux UD soient<br />
inscrites comme étant en voie de disparition dans la Loi sur les<br />
espèces en péril du Canada. La ministre de l’Environnement doit<br />
entreprendre des consultations avec les Inuit du Nunavik avant de<br />
rendre une décision finale. Les consultations devaient se tenir en<br />
septembre <strong>2018</strong>, mais elles ont été reportées.<br />
