ᐱᓇᓱᐊᕆᐊᓕᓕᒫᑦᑎᓂᒃ.
In early April, we were informed that Hydro-Quebec was
intending on releasing water from its Duplanter spillway into the
Caniapiscau water shed. This prompted many concerns, public
hearings and community actions. One of those was for our research
centre to conduct environmental baseline studies of the Caniapiscau
river and of the reservoir itself. Sediment, water and fish samples
were collected for heavy metal analysis at several sites. Data from
satellite imagery was obtained of river banks pre and post spillage
to evaluate possible erosion.
Diseased animals and fish are still of concern to all of us and we
urge everyone to send us samples of any suspicious animals they
catch as soon as possible so we may analyze them to find out what
has caused deformities or abnormalities.
Our staff continue to collaborate with the federal Canadian
Wildlife Service (CWS) regarding geese banding efforts to determine
population estimates of Canada geese, and have equally participated
in provincially led raptor surveys conducted to better understand
these birds of prey and their range.
We also collaborated with both academic and government
partners on numerous other files and I invite readers to seek more
information on these topics elsewhere in this report.
I look forward to serving Nunavimmiut to the best of my capacity
in the coming year and wish to assure everyone that protecting
our resources, culture and harvesting rights is forefront in all of my
activities. I thank all my staff for their dedication and encourage
everyone to continue their efforts on all files.
Duplanter vers le bassin versant de la rivière Caniapiscau. Cela a
suscité de nombreuses inquiétudes et entrainé la tenue d’audiences
publiques et l’adoption de diverses mesures communautaires. Le
centre de recherche a notamment exécuté des études environnementales
de référence sur la rivière Caniapiscau et le réservoir
lui-même. Des échantillons de sédiments, d’eau et de poissons ont
été prélevés pour analyser les métaux lourds sur plusieurs sites.
Des données satellitaires des berges des rivières avant et après le
déversement ont été obtenues afin d’évaluer la possible érosion.
Les animaux et les poissons malades demeurent une constante
préoccupation, et nous invitons tous les gens à nous envoyer dès
que possible des échantillons des animaux suspects capturés
afin que nous puissions les analyser pour déterminer la cause des
malformations ou des anomalies.
Notre personnel continue de collaborer avec le Service canadien
de la faune (SCF) pour le baguage des bernaches du Canada
afin d’estimer leur population. Il participe également à des relevés
effectués par la province sur les rapaces afin de mieux comprendre
ces oiseaux et leurs aires de répartition.
Nous avons également collaboré avec des partenaires universitaires
et gouvernementaux sur de nombreux autres dossiers, et
j’invite les lecteurs à lire le présent rapport pour plus d’information

Je continuerai de servir les Nunavimmiut au meilleur de mes
capacités au cours de la prochaine année, et je tiens à vous assurer
