Also in March, ITK launched the National Inuit Strategy on
Research. The research strategy, developed in coordination with
the Inuit Qaujusarvingat National Committee, seeks to solve many
issues Inuit experience when research is conducted in Inuit Nunangat
or on Inuit. It addresses the goal of Inuit self-determination in
research, one of ITK’s seven core objectives in the 2016-19 Strategy
and Action Plan.
Natan Obed was re-elected as ITK President in August 2018. The
election was held August 16 in Inuvik, Inuvialuit Settlement Region,
following ITK’s Annual General Meeting. Obed was one of three
candidates for ITK president. The ITK election occurs every three
years. Presidents of the four Inuit land claims settlement regions
and two delegates per region vote for president.
ITK hosted 11 senior federal government officials in Nunavik as
part of the Inuit Executive Training Program in September. The public
servants travelled to Kuujjuaq, Quaqtaq, Inukjuak and Montreal to
learn about Inuit realities, priorities and Inuit culture. The program
runs twice per year, with the destination rotating between the four
Inuit regions.
The Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee continued its important
work, meeting three times per year. The ICPC is a bilateral partnership
between Inuit and the government of Canada to act on shared
priorities with the goal of advancing reconciliation and creating
prosperity for Inuit. In the past year the ICPC has achieved:
– Apology to survivors of the Nunatsiavut Residential School
system
– Commitment to eliminate tuberculosis in Inuit Nunangat by
2030
à la suite de l’assemblée générale annuelle d’ITK. Obed était l’un
des trois candidats à ce poste qui fait l’objet d’une élection tous
les trois ans. Les présidents des quatre régions inuites de revendications
territoriales et deux délégués par région votent pour
choisir le président.
L’ITK a accueilli 11 hauts fonctionnaires fédéraux au Nunavik
lors du programme de formation des cadres tenu en septembre.
Les fonctionnaires se sont rendus à Kuujjuaq, Quaqtaq, Inukjuak et
Montréal afin de mieux comprendre les réalités, les priorités et la
culture des Inuit. Le programme est offert deux fois par année en
alternance entre les quatre régions de l’Inuit Nunangat.
Le Comité de partenariat entre les Inuit et la Couronne, qui se
réunit trois fois par année, a poursuivi son important travail. Le
CPIC est un partenariat bilatéral entre les Inuit et le gouvernement
du Canada visant à assurer l’avancement de priorités communes
dans le but de faire progresser la réconciliation et de créer de la
prospérité pour tous les Inuit. Voici les réalisations du CPIC au cours
de la dernière année :
– Excuses aux survivants des pensionnats du Nunatsiavut
– Engagement à éliminer la tuberculose dans l’Inuit Nunangat
d’ici 2030
– Engagement à créer une initiative propre aux Inuit équivalente
au principe de Jordan
– Financement d’une nouvelle enquête sur la santé des Inuit
– Engagement à renforcer l’éducation de la maternelle à la 12 e
année pour les Inuit
Le travail se poursuivra en 2019 dans les dossiers suivants :
– Stratégie sur l’habitation dans l’Inuit Nunangat
– Cadre stratégique pour l’Arctique
