Medical/Legal Pitfalls:<br />

• Delay in diagnosis and initiation <strong>of</strong> treatment may result in death <strong>of</strong> the infant.<br />

• Failure to provide prophylaxis to women with GBS infection may create liability if the infant<br />

subsequently becomes ill.<br />

Special Concerns: The Joint Commission on Infant Hearing <strong>of</strong> the AAP recommends that infants<br />

who received aminoglycosides should have audiology screening before discharge. Screen these<br />

infants again at 3 months, but no later than 6 months, to determine whether damage has occurred.<br />
